HOW ARE THEY REPRESENTED?

USA – House of Representatives: 435 members elected from individual congressional districts. The number of representatives per state depends on its population.

USA – Senate: 100 members, with 2 Senators representing each of the 50 states.

India – Lok Sabha: Members are directly elected by voters from parliamentary constituencies.

India – Rajya Sabha: Members are mostly elected by elected MLAs of State Legislative Assemblies, with 12 members nominated by the President.

Important distinction: Unlike the US Senate (where every state gets equal representation – 2 Senators), India’s Rajya Sabha representation varies according to the population of each state.

MIDTERM ELECTIONS (USA):

Midterm Elections in the USA are elections held halfway through the US President’s four-year term, usually after two years.

In simple terms, imagine a US President gets elected in 2024 for a four-year term (2025–2029). The elections held in November 2026 are called Midterm Elections.

What happens in Midterm Elections?

During these elections, Americans vote for:

1. All 435 members of the House of Representatives – the lower house of the US Congress.

2. Around one-third of the Senate – the upper house of Congress (usually 33 or 34 seats).

3. Several State Governors – depending on which states have elections that year.

4. Other state and local representatives.

Why are Midterm Elections important?

The most important reason is that they determine which political party controls the US Congress.

For example:

The President belongs to the Republican Party.

But in the Midterm Elections, the Democrats win more seats in Congress.

Now, the President has to deal with a Congress controlled by the opposition party.

This can make it difficult for the President to pass new laws, approve budgets and implement policies.

USA: Midterm Elections vs Presidential Elections

One interesting point

Midterm Elections are often considered a public report card on the sitting President’s performance.

If people are unhappy with the President’s policies, economy, administration or governance, they may vote for the opposition party.

In one line: Midterm Elections give American voters an opportunity, halfway through a President’s term, to change the political balance of power in Congress without changing the President.
